Nutrition in the Elderly Course

Franklin’s Training Services have been providing training across the UK for almost 20 years.

Course duration:

3 hours

Aim:

To give you knowledge on how to best give the correct nutritional requirements and support to those that you assist on a daily basis.

Objectives:

  • Describe factors effecting food intake & choice.
  • Identify nutrients and their functions.
  • Discuss changes that may affect the diet.
  • Identify how to promote healthy eating in the care setting.
  • Recognise and understand dysphagia and how to support someone with this.
  • Explain fluid balance and hydration.
  • Identify fluid intake and benefits.
  • Demonstrate use of the Malnutrition Universal Screening Tool.
  • Recognise signs of malnutrition and dehydration.
  • Be able recognise and prepare nutritional snacks.

At the end of the training session, candidates will have covered the following modules:

  • Key standards and guidelines.
  • Understanding nutrition and malnutrition.
  • The ‘MUST’ tool.
  • The 5 ‘MUST’ steps.
  • Barriers for implementation.
  • What is nutrition and nutrients?.
  • Macronutrients.

  • Older adults – 9 essential nutrients.
  • “The healthy eating plate”.
  • What is energy?
  • How can I help?
  • Things to remember.
  • Hydration.
  • How to recognise dehydration.
  • How to help avoid dehydration.
